Following his initial musicalstudies in Mulhouse, ChristianWirth attended the ConservatoireNational Supérieur de Musique etde Danse de Paris (where he wastaught byClaude Delangle), wherehe was unanimously awarded theFirst Prizes for saxophone andchamber music.
He went on to win a number of national and internationalprizes, including the ConcoursInternational Adolphe Sax (1stGrand Prix – Saint-Nom-la-Bretêche), the Festival Musicald’Automne desJeunes Interprètes(1st Prize – Deuil La Barre), andfirst prizes in internationalchamber music competitions inBordeaux, Düsseldorf, Illzach,Osaka, Sanguinetto, andelsewhere.
He founded the Habanerasaxophone quartet, with which hehas recorded Mysterious Morning(awarded a Diapason d’Or), Grieg-Glazounov Dvorák, l’Engrenage,andRavel-Debussy-Chausson.
The quartet has commissionedmany works and has had manydedicated to it, by P. Eötvös, P. Leroux, F. Tanada, B. Mantovani,A. Markeas, F. Levy, L. Bord, andF. Motsch, among others.
Under the artistic direction of thecomposer, he made a criticallyacclaimed recording of LucianoBerio’s Sequenza IXb for DeutscheGrammophon.
In 1995, he was successful in the competition to enter theprestigious Orchestre d’Harmoniede la Garde Républicaine, of whichhe became saxophone solo in2013.
He teaches at the ConservatoireMaurice Ravel de Paris XIIIe and also gives masterclassesthroughout the world and atsummer schools such as theUniversité Européenne deSaxophone in Gap and the ArosaMusic Academy.
